HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA

A woman was recently arrested in Hollywood, Florida for DUI (the Texas equivalent of DWI) after being struck from behind in her automobile by a Hollywood police car.  The woman promptly admitted to having "a few drinks" and thats when the story becomes sordid.

The incident was captured on the police car video recorder.  After learning the woman had been drinking prior to the accident, one officer can be heard telling another, "I don't lie or make things up...ever.  But, if I need to bend it a little to protect the cop, I'm gonna."

The officers conspired to change the facts about the accident occurred in an effort to make it appear that it was the woman's fault.

The officers arrested the woman and charged her with DUI.  She submitted to a breath test which revealed a breath alcohol concentration (BAC) of approximately .18, over twice the legal limit.

Upon viewing the in car video, Hollywood authorities dropped the charges against the woman and placed all four officers involved on administrative leave pending investigation.  In addition to termination, authorities are considering pressing criminal charges against the officers involved.

Shocking, yes.  But this happens all to frequently.  If it happens at all it is too frequently.  There are many good officers that pursue a case based solely on the actual facts involved, as they should.  However, there are others who are only concerned with making their case regardless of what they have to do...regardless of whether they have to "bend it a little."  These officers, who feel that no matter what they do the end justifies the means, give the rest a bad name.

The woman in this case blew over two times the legal limit.  This could have potentially been a winnable case for the state had they stuck to the actual facts.  Furthermore, this one incident compromises every case that these officers are involved in.  The one statement above shows that the officer can't be trusted to tell the truth about ANYTHING!  And the fact that the other three officers went along with it knowing it wasn't true shows that they cannot be trusted as well.

These officers should be charged criminally.  They have a great deal of trust placed in their hands by the citizenry and they have abused that trust.  They have brought harm to the very people they are sworn to protect.  The officer that lied in the arrest affidavit should be charged with perjury for lying in a sworn affidavit.
