After spending 26 years in prison, Bill Dillon was released following a DNA test which conclusively proved he was not the one who killed a man in Canova Beach, Florida, decades ago.
Dillon was convicted based solely on the testimony of a canine tracking dog handler named, John Preston. Preston claimed that his dog, Harass 2, was so good at tracking that he could even follow a scent underwater. Dillon was convicted after Preston testified that a bloody t-shirt led Harass 2 to Dillon. Preston's testimony about his dogs tracking abilities had aided in sending over 100 people to prison in the seventies and eighties.
Preston lost credibility in 1984 after a suspicious judge set up his own test for the dog. The dog failed miserably and could not even track 100 feet. The judge determined that the dog could only track successfully when his handler had advance notice of the facts of the case. Unfortunately, Dillon did not learn of all this until 2006!
Dillon requested DNA testing to be done on the shirt. Tests results showed that Dillon was no the killer.
